A few months ago, someone told me I was very brave to run my own business here! Behind those words, I heard what they didn’t say: brave because English is my second language. I took it as a compliment.
People often ask why a French person moves to England and loves it so much. One reason is that running a business as a sole trader or a company is so much easier here! England is my home now, and it gave me a chance to start over.
Running my business was a dream for years, but then I realised something deeper: thanks to the flexibility, I could manage my health so much better. My body is actually fitter now in my 40s than it was in my 20s! It makes me wonder: Is a dream an expression of our intuition or soul?
Finding your “Why” to manage a purpose-driven business
To go deeper, you may have seen Simon Sinek’s famous video about “The why?” This is the purpose that helps us manage the storms. It has changed how we present our businesses and how we build our foundations.
We talk a lot more about mission and vision now. This is my favourite part of the marketing support I provide for my clients. It’s a process you can do when you start your business, and also every couple of years to ensure that you are still aligned with your brand, your business and your clients.
When my clients do this, they tell me it gives them a new energy and clarity:
- The vision is your North Star. I like to say: if I give you a magic wand and everything is possible, where are you going?
- The mission: This is more tangible. It’s why your ideal clients want to buy from you. The focus on your present from where you write your marketing strategy, actions plan, your business do-to-list!
It’s natural to want to jump straight into marketing tasks to see the numbers grow. However, a strong brand foundation attracts the right audience much faster. It makes you feel stronger and empowered.
