“I’m doing that because I’ve been told to do so.” Do you ever find yourself saying this to justify your business actions? In the past, I changed direction so many times to adapt to what others expected of me. When you hear “you are not good enough” or “you are too sensitive” enough times, a part of you starts to believe it.
But for the last 12 years, being my own boss has been my best learning curve. I have worked hard to reclaim my worth. I’ve realized that my sensitivity is actually one of my greatest strengths; it brings so much value to my clients. I felt ashamed of it for a long time because of the idea that “you need to be strong to run a business,” and I’ve learned that being the captain of the ship is about being yourself.
A special celebration
Tomorrow, the 10th of February, marks exactly 6 years since I moved to England! It’s been a successful journey, though some years were better than others.
Someone once called me a serial entrepreneur. I actually prefer multi-entrepreneur, because as soon as I hear the word "serial," I immediately think "killer"—hahaha! (But really, I’m just here to help your business grow).
Two years ago, someone told me I was on a “route to failure” when I said I wanted to go back to selling a programme. Well, it is finally happening!
I am so excited to announce that Knowing Yourself to Market Yourself is now available. This is a pilot programme—a co-creation. As a thank you for helping me shape this programme with your feedback, you can join this pilot group for a special, one-time small fee.
If you can’t answer “Why,” let’s change it
I often hear fellow business owners justify their marketing by saying they were told to do it. One of my clients once asked me: ”Why are we doing this? I’ve been asked by a client and I can’t answer.”
My answer was: “If you can’t answer that question, it is probably the wrong action for your business.” Marketing has a huge range of strategies, and I love the “try and test” approach. When you are choosing where to show up, ask yourself:
- Is it where your audience is?
- Is it the platform you feel most comfortable with?
- Do you have time for it?
- Can you measure the impact?
Marketing with a Human Touch
I started in Marketing before social media was even a thing. Today, we have AI! I see it as a great tool for research or checking my spelling, and I still question the accuracy of its answers.
While researching for a presentation, I found a big number on the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) website: “80% of small business owners say they have experienced symptoms of poor mental health.” I can include myself in that number. What about you?
Listening to others is great because it can stimulate our creativity and open doors, but drawing the line between “listening and making it our own” and simply adapting what we are doing to please others is important.
