Around ten years ago in Paris, I was listening to a great speaker who said that in life, there are two types of people: the PP and the PP. While it makes sense in French, let me translate: the first type, pas possible (not possible), and the second, pourquoi pas (why not?!). The first decision you make is: which type of person are you?

Do you see the glass as half-full or half-empty? That perspective influences more than just your attitude: it shapes the kind of planet and environment you want your children to inherit. Sustainability starts with this mindset shift: a decision to be a why not person, open to solutions that benefit both present and future generations.

When I mention that I work in sustainability, many people assume it’s just about being "green." But it’s so much more! First, it’s about moving beyond the capitalist idea of getting richer at any cost. It’s about realising the impact of our actions: on people, on the planet, and on long-term prosperity. Some argue that during a crisis, businesses don’t have time for sustainability. But I see it differently: a crisis is the perfect opportunity to redefine a business, to add deeper values, and to build resilience. Sustainability is the tool that enables that transformation.

Sustainability Is Future-Focused

Sustainability means making decisions not just for today, but for tomorrow, for our children and future generations. And how empowering is that? It means shifting from short-term wins to long-term success.

For example, when designing a new product or service, start with your customers. Ask: What do they truly need? This is a shift from creating a need to answering one. Then, consider materials and production: How can I minimise waste? Can I incorporate circular economy principles to reduce reliance on raw materials? This mindset focuses on "less is more," redefining success beyond just selling more and more.

Seeing the Bigger Picture

A sustainability-first approach isn’t just about the environment: it’s about people. It means valuing employees, involving them in the process, and ensuring that both staff and customers feel connected to the business. Employees who feel valued become the best ambassadors for your brand. Customers who trust that a business prioritises sustainability will stay loyal. This approach fosters not just profit but sustainable success.

The Shift to Long-Term Thinking

Sustainability requires us to embrace long-term goals, not just quick wins. It’s not that short-term success isn’t achievable: it is! But a sustainability mindset encourages us to make better decisions that benefit both the present and the future.

More and more businesses are integrating sustainability as a core strategic pillar, not just for compliance, but because they believe in a better future. They recognise that sustainable business practices strengthen community ties, increase staff loyalty, and enhance brand reputation. So, I leave you with this question: Which mindset will you choose? Will you be pas possible, seeing obstacles? Or pourquoi pas, seeing opportunities for a better future? And if you're ready to take that step, I am just a phone call away to help your business thrive!
